Joi Harris soon got her license as a respiratory therapist and worked in the sleep center at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, commuting from her home in nearby Oakdale.
Under the nickname 'SJ Sidewayz' and bearing the No. 24, Harris mostly competed at New Jersey Motorsports Park in South Jersey and Summit Point Motorsports Park in West Virginia, often racing in more than one amateur or semi-pro event a night.
The thrill-seeker got her motorcycle license in 2009 and took lessons so she could qualify for her racing license in 2013. A year later, she cemented her role as a road-racing pioneer when she began competing with the American Sportbike Racing Association/Championship Cup Series.
