Stunt Memorial: Cosgrove, Scott (RIP)

Scott Cosgrove

Born: 1964

Passed: 2016

Cosgrove died Feb. 23 during a hike in the Santa Monica Mountains above Agoura Hills, Calif., his business manager, Gail Wilson, told The Hollywood Reporter. Wilson said he was found by a fellow hiker.

A climbing and rigging specialist who was a go-to guide for many of America's elite Special Forces, Cosgrove helped teach Jennifer Lawrence to climb for The Hunger Games (2012) and collaborated with Mark Wahlberg on the war film Lone Survivor (2013).

He also worked on such films as Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005), 300 (2006), Live Free or Die Hard (2007), Rush Hour 3 (2007), Tron: Legacy (2010), The Expendables 2 (2012) and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013). Cosgrove, owner of the company California Mountain Guides, completed some of the hardest sport climbs in the country, with more than 400 first ascents. Notably, he navigated the south face of Yosemite’s Half Dome as well as the Central Tower of Paine in Chile.

Cosgrove was a contributor to Alpinist magazine, and it reported that in October 2014 he suffered near-fatal injuries, including a fractured skull and broken ribs, when he fell 30 feet from a crane onto concrete. Wilson noted that he was doing aerial rigging for a new-media project that was being shot in a hangar at Burbank Bob Hope Airport.

She said Cosgrove was kept in a coma for almost two months.

After multiple surgeries, Cosgrove was moved to an acute care hospital, then underwent rehabilitation at Casa Colina in Pomona, Calif. He recently was living on his own in an apartment in Los Angeles and hiking every day following his physical therapy sessions, Wilson said.
